Majority of Texas Hispanics Have Unfavorable View of Obamacare
Law's Supporters Must Face Reality

(Washington, D.C.) – As in other states with significant Hispanic populations, polling shows that Latinos in Texas are increasingly turning against the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. According to the recent University of Texas poll, a majority of the state's Hispanic population now has an unfavorable view of the law – with a stunning 41 percent saying they have a "very unfavorable" opinion of this new system. Overall, Texans are deeply opposed to the law, with just about half saying their view is "very unfavorable."

Among Hispanics, views of the law have worsened significantly during the enrollment period, and continue to trend negatively. In October, 46 percent of Texas Hispanics had an unfavorable view of the law, with 35 percent describing their views as "very unfavorable," according to the same poll. Earlier this month, a poll in Colorado found that 57% of Latinos in that state disapproved of the ACA. Nationally, a recent poll from PEW illustrated that Hispanics were split on the law, signaling a sharp drop in support since just late last year.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

"Supporters of the President's health care law still insist it's some great gift for the nation's Hispanics. They keep telling Latinos to sign up and pay for plans, and make unilateral changes to their own deadlines in attempts to continue selling the law to the public. Even today, the Administration signaled an extension of the enrollment period, providing HHS with more time to acquire the much needed Hispanic enrollees who are simply not signing up. Hispanics in Texas, just like other Hispanic communities across the country, have now lost all hope that any fixes or delays will improve this failed program. Rather than extend time periods and continue to push Americans towards a flawed system, it's time they stopped talking and started listening.

This law was enacted 4 years ago, and the first year enrollment is nearly over. People have checked out their options, and they are finding that the premiums and deductibles are too high, and the networks of doctors are too narrow. They also know that rates are projected to go up, and so will the penalty for not buying insurance. This law just isn't fair, and it doesn't work."
