Hispanic Small Businesses Hurt by Latest Broken Health Care Promise
Administration Admits Law Will Raise Costs for Most Small Employers

(Washington, D.C.) – According to the White House, it is a “myth” that the health care law will raise costs on business. The White House website says “Fact: Health insurance reform lowers costs for American businesses – especially small businesses.” Yet according to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the law will raise health insurance costs for two-thirds of them. The agency further states that because employers tend to pass on rate increases to their employees, about 11 million of the 17 million Americans working for small businesses will see their health insurance rates go up.

It is not just the White House website that promised small businesses would see rate reductions. The President himself declared in 2009 that the law would allow entrepreneurs to keep plans they liked, but would make them “more affordable,” adding that rates could go down by 25 percent for these smaller companies.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

“Latinos create new businesses at twice the national rate and accounted for nearly 20 percent of all new entrepreneurs in 2012. They deal with costly and intrusive regulations, onerous taxes, and an extremely challenging economic environment. When they survive and thrive, they are a critical contributor to job creation and new hiring. This news – which comes during what the White House is calling ‘Latino Enrollment Week’ – is extremely disappointing, but not surprising, given the broken promises we have seen so far.

Real health care reform would seek to empower doctors and patients, preserve the best parts of the current system, expand choice, and promote competition to reduce costs and encourages innovation. Unfortunately, small business owners are the latest to see that the promises that were made have not come true. It turns out that those who have benefitted from this law are mostly those who have been exempted from it, and a significant portion of the losers have been our country’s most vulnerable.”
